Character of the Week #346

Back when conceptart.org was a thing they used to host a weekly challenge of sorts for people to design a character. As the site is gone now, I'm going to post my one and only entry here for people to see.

These were the guidelines for the challenge. On that week we had to create an Insect Ruler. I settled on a queen leaf bug. At the time I actually had a pet leaf bug that looked quite similar to the ones pictured below in my style guide. Her name was Eggplant!

A second sketch based on one of the thumbnails I had drawn.

This is a cleaned up sketch which nailed more of the details.

I played around with some colours and settled on greens, golds, and oranges.

I started to flesh the colour out some more and figure out my light source.

Here the queen is mostly rendered out.

Here is my final step and my submission for the challenge.

This was one of the first big pieces I made that also included colour. It was a lot of work and I liked the way it turned out. I'm not fond of some things, like the face, hair, and staff, but I know they are things I'll need to work on for the future. Thanks for checking this out!
