Hi, I'm David, and this is my new sketchbook blog called Sketchbook Vorgus. I used to have a sketchbook over at conceptart.org, but unfortunately the website has shut down. On that site I was posting gestures, sketches, life drawings, studies - basically my journey to enhance my drawing craft. I really like the idea of posting this kind of work for people to see, and it helped keep me motivated and beholden to some kind of regular schedule. So, I've decided it's time to start doing this once again!
I looked around and didn't really find any good sketchbook art forums. There were some places to post mostly finished work like artstation.com, deviantart.com, and others, and then there were some really underpopulated and old art forums that didn't fit what I wanted either. The upside to a site like conceptart.org was that it was really active, and people were posting all sorts of works in progress or studies. Now that it's gone, I've decided I'm going to make this blog my new place to post my studies, gestures, etc. So, while it might not get much outside traffic I'm going to try and give it my attention as if it were.
My goal is to do some drawing everyday, and hopefully post this content once or twice a week. Life, however, is a chaotic, busy mess sometimes - especially with a toddler running around. Drawing everyday is a goal of mine, even for just 30 minutes to an hour (ideally longer!), but I recognize the realities of the world I inhabit so it might not always be possible. I shall not fret. I shall simply persevere!
Now, lets get some examples of the sorts of things I hope to posting here at Sketchbook Vorgus.
First off, we got some gestures. I try to do these pretty much everyday as a warm-up exercise. Some days I'm happy with the way they turn out. Other days they look like poop. However, for me their purpose, no matter how they look, is to warm up my hands and eyes for the drawings which lay ahead.
Here we have one of my studies of a sort. I've been working on heads lately so that's what we have here, but I tend to go through all different parts of the body - or even non-body subjects. Usually I use a resource like a book or YouTube video to get me started and then fill a page full practicing different angles or lighting.
When I have some spare time I'll sometimes get some doodles in. I'll just draw whatever I feel like and have some fun. Sometimes I create something that's kind of neat so I'll make sure to share it!
Occasionally, when I'm not drowning myself in ambitious study goals, I'll actually produce something... finished. This doesn't happen too often, but I'd like to get there more often and flex my creativity instead of just my draftsmanship and anatomy knowledge.
So, there are some examples of what you could see here, but there are a whole lot of other areas I want to explore. Drapery, comics, colour study, landscapes, perspective, storyboarding, pixel art, game design, and more! Well, I better get started.
