Random Doodles - Featuring the Battery Squad & Necro Mage

Just because I haven't been posting lately doesn't mean I haven't managed to make some small doodles from time to time. Check it out!

On the left we have the Battery Squad. From a world where everyone is some kind of battery, AA, AAA, C, D, and small cell batteries. What kind of world is this? I don't really know, but I thought they were kind of cute. I imagine a giant car battery would be some kind of evil villain.

On the right are a couple of small sketches - including a possible starting point for a young girl character in a graphic novel. More interesting though is the Necro Mage. Cloaked in many layers with clasps and ribbons they are a master in dark purple magic. What kind of magic is this? Something evil no doubt.

Some Doodles to Fill The Space

I've been pretty busy with life and with getting my old Zazzle shop, Shop Vorgus, up to date. It's getting a new coat of paint and a lot of junk is being removed. The goal is to tidy it up, and then finally start getting some new things on there - including the recent hypnotic octopus designs I created. Eventually I'd like to expand to other platforms like redbubble and society6. Doing that all at once is daunting - so baby steps! In the mean time, whenever I get a spare moment and have a pen and paper nearby I try to doodle down the ideas in my head. Here's some stuff!

I've got a couple ideas for future projects as well a cool archer girl I was inspired to draw.

At the top are ideas for a building I wanted to make in Minecraft, and below are ideas I have for various other projects including a new board game!

More Minecraft plans mingling with random head doodles and terrible hand practice.

Exploring Different Styles

I wanted to try copying and doodling some heads using styles from other artists. I'm not settled on how I want my graphic novel to look, but I've definitely got a direction as should become pretty obvious looking at the examples below. Styles that have clean lines, minimal colour gradients, basic shapes, simplified forms, and basic shading appeal to me and are all things I want to incorporate into my style when I design characters for my book. I had fun doodling through the various references below!

Adventure Time is one of my favourite shows and the clean linework, simple colours really appeal. Faces are also very simplified - the eyes especially.

Andrew McClean has some nice linework reminiscent of Mike Mignola's Hellboy. I like the simple forms and shape with detail added on top.

Anthony Holden has a unique style that is sort of anime and sort of cartoon. I really dig it, and it all looks so adorable!

Hilda by Luke Pearson is another inspiration. I really like the look it got when it transitioned to being animated on Netflix.

Stephen Universe has such great character designs. One head is just a sphere in a box - that's awesome and also much easier to visualize in imaginary 3D space.

Varguy has some beautiful artwork. His linework is simple and a clean, but also has a loose quality to them. I feel like the colour choices combined with his linework make his pieces stand out.

Some Doodles

Just a few doodles, practicing expressions and having fun. My daughter got a hold of the one and scribbled a few lines over it - an artist in the making!

Some Head Doodles

I had a few minutes here and there and a nearby piece of scrap paper and a ballpoint pen so I sketched a few heads. I tried to make some really different heads with really pronounced features.

Random Assorted Doodles

Some of these are old, and some of these are newer. Here's a random assortment of doodles! Random things drawn on scrap pieces of paper included. More to come in the future, but, for now, here are some to get the doodles started.

An assortment of random characters.

Heads!

Me from imagination on the right.

Some kind of pointy Eye of the Sun warrior.

Some odd looking sock puppet head character.

More heads!

Employee and a giant lizard with a mace.
